Kepler-243: A Cool Star With Two Super-Earths

Kepler-243 is a star 2260 light-years away with two known planets, Kepler-243 b and Kepler-243 c. The star is 4.79 billion years old, has 0.83 solar masses, 0.79 solar radii, and a temperature of 5130 K. Its mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

Both planets are Super-Earths discovered by transit in 2014. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-243 b has an orbital period of 5.72 days and a radius of 2.45 Earth radii, the largest radius and the shortest year among the listed planets. Kepler-243 c orbits every 20 days with a radius of 1.99 Earth radii, the smallest radius and longest year among the listed planets. Both planets' reported radius estimates are larger than Earth's.
