Kepler-1898 b: A Sub-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1898 is a single-star system 1180 light-years away. Its host star has 0.761 solar masses, 0.854 solar radii, and a temperature of 5320 K, making its reported mass and radius estimates smaller than the Sun's and its reported temperature cooler. The star is 13.2 billion years old. One planet orbits this host.

Kepler-1898 b was discovered by transit in 2021. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1898 b completes an orbit every 4.77 days. Its radius is 0.934 Earth radii, smaller than Earth's. This places it in the Sub-Earth size class, which compares radius with Earth's: a Sub-Earth is smaller than Earth.
