Kepler-1722 b: A Neptune-like World in a Distant System

Kepler-1722 is a star located 2520 light-years away, with a reported mass of 0.859 solar masses - smaller than the Sun's - and a radius of 0.795 solar radii. Its reported temperature of 5500 K is cooler than the Sun's. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet, Kepler-1722 b, was discovered in 2021 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1722 b completes an orbit every 9.18 days and has a reported radius of 2.87 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. This places it in the Neptune-like size class, which extends to 4 times Earth's radius.
