Kepler-1689 b: A Sub-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1689 is a star located 959 light-years away, with a mass of 1.02 solar masses, a radius of 0.996 solar radii, and a temperature of 5730 K. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is Kepler-1689 b, a Sub-Earth detected by transit in 2020. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1689 b completes one orbit every 8.48 days. Its radius is 0.947 Earth radii, and its reported radius estimate is smaller than Earth's. Planet size classes compare radius with Earth's: a Sub-Earth is smaller than Earth.

Measurements such as these define all that is currently known about the Kepler-1689 system and its lone world.
