Kepler-1619 b: A Sub-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1619 is a star located 2400 light-years away. It has a mass of 1 solar mass and a radius of 1 solar radius. Its temperature is 5850 K, and its age is 4.27 billion years. One planet orbits this star.

That planet is Kepler-1619 b, discovered in 2016 by the transit method. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness, and repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1619 b completes an orbit every 23.6 days and has a radius of 0.76 Earth radii. Its reported radius estimate is smaller than Earth's, placing it in the Sub-Earth size class, which compares radius with Earth's and describes planets smaller than Earth.
