Kepler-1589 b: A Close-Orbiting Earth-Like World

Kepler-1589 is a star 4940 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 2.75 billion years old, with a mass of 1.18 solar masses, a radius of 1.25 solar radii, and a temperature of 6170 K. Its mass and radius estimates exceed the Sun's, and it is hotter than the Sun.

The system's sole cataloged planet is Kepler-1589 b, an Earth-like world discovered by transit in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet crosses in front of its star from our viewpoint, producing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1589 b orbits every 0.992 days and has a radius of 1.09 Earth radii. Earth-like planets stay within 1.5 times Earth's radius.
