Kepler-1557 b: A Super-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1557 is a star located 4,500 light-years away, with a single known planet in orbit around it. The star has a mass of 1.11 solar masses and a radius of 1.17 solar radii, both larger than the Sun's corresponding values, and its temperature of 6100 K is hotter than the Sun's. It is 3.31 billion years old.

The planet Kepler-1557 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness, and repeated dips help establish its orbital period. Kepler-1557 b completes one orbit in 3.74 days. Its radius of 1.53 Earth radii is larger than Earth's, placing it in the Super-Earth size class, which spans radii up to 2.5 times Earth's.
