Kepler-1221 and Its Super-Earth

Kepler-1221 is a star 2980 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 4.57 billion years old and has a reported mass of 0.87 solar masses, a radius of 0.82 solar radii, and a temperature of 5190 K. Each of these estimates is smaller or cooler than the corresponding value for the Sun.

The planet Kepler-1221 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1221 b completes one orbit in 12 days, and its radius of 1.88 Earth radii is larger than Earth's. That radius places it in the Super-Earth size class, which extends to 2.5 times Earth's radius.
