Kepler-1195 b: A Super-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1195 is a star located 3000 light-years away. It is 4.47 billion years old and has a mass of 0.74 solar masses, a radius of 0.71 solar radii, and a temperature of 4970 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. One planet is known in this system.

That planet, Kepler-1195 b, is a Super-Earth discovered by the transit method in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1195 b orbits every 8.5 days and has a radius of 2.08 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Planet size classes compare radius with Earth's, and a Super-Earth reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius.
