Kepler-1170 b: A Super-Earth in a Close Orbit

Kepler-1170 is a star located 3430 light-years from Earth, and it hosts one known planet. The star is estimated to be 4.9 billion years old, with a mass of 0.8 solar masses and a radius of 0.76 solar radii. Its temperature is 5070 K. Each of these reported values is smaller or cooler than the corresponding value for the Sun.

The planet, Kepler-1170 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is classified as a Super-Earth, a size class that reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius. Its reported radius is 2.41 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and it completes an orbit in 9.99 days.
