Kepler-1146 b: A Close-In Earth-Sized World

Kepler-1146 is a single star located 2290 light-years away, and it hosts exactly one known planet. The star is estimated to be 4.9 billion years old, with a mass of 0.74 solar masses and a radius of 0.7 solar radii. Its temperature is 4690 K. Each of these reported values is smaller or cooler than the corresponding value for the Sun.

The sole planet in this system is Kepler-1146 b, classified as Earth-like because its radius of 1.23 Earth radii stays within 1.5 times Earth's radius. That radius is larger than Earth's. It was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1146 b completes one orbit every 2.35 days.
