Kepler-1023 b: A Neptune-like World in a Distant System

Kepler-1023 is a star located 2260 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star is estimated to be 4.47 billion years old, with a mass of 0.93 solar masses and a radius of 0.89 solar radii. Its temperature is 5490 K, cooler than the Sun's, and both its mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's.

The system's only known planet, Kepler-1023 b, was discovered by the transit method in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1023 b completes one orbit every 62.1 days and has a radius of 2.63 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. It is classified as Neptune-like, a size class for planets reaching up to 4 times Earth's radius.
