Kepler-1297 b: A Sub-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1297 is a single-star system located 4690 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The host star has a mass of 0.99 solar masses and a radius of 0.99 solar radii, making it very similar in size and mass to the Sun. Its temperature is 5820 K, and its age is 4.17 billion years.

The system's only known planet, Kepler-1297 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1297 b completes an orbit in 1.68 days and has a radius of 0.97 Earth radii. As a Sub-Earth, it is smaller than Earth. Its radius is the only measured property directly constraining its size, while its orbital period places it among the shortest known among the listed planets.
