Kepler-1240 b: An Earth-Sized World in a Distant System

Kepler-1240 is a single star located 2810 light-years from Earth. The star is 4.07 billion years old, has a mass of 0.98 solar masses, a radius of 0.96 solar radii, and a temperature of 5680 K. One planet orbits this host.

Kepler-1240 b is an Earth-like planet discovered by transit in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet crosses in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in brightness that can repeat and reveal the planet's orbital period. Kepler-1240 b completes one orbit every 4.87 days, and its radius is 1.15 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. A radius of 1.15 Earth radii falls within the Earth-like size class, which extends to 1.5 times Earth's radius.
