KOI-13 b: A Giant World

KOI-13 is a star 1690 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 1.12 billion years old, has a mass of 1.67 solar masses and a radius of 2 solar radii, and has a temperature of 8480 K. Its mass and radius are both larger than the Sun's, and its temperature is hotter than the Sun's.

The planet KOI-13 b was discovered by transit in 2011. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods.

KOI-13 b is Jupiter-like, a size class for planets whose radius exceeds 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius is 16.9 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Its mass is 2950 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's and roughly 9.28 times Jupiter's mass. Its mean density is 3.34 g/cm³, 0.606 times Earth's. It completes one orbit in 1.76 days.
