KELT-3 and Its Jupiter-Like Planet

KELT-3 is a star 686 light-years away with a Jupiter-like planet in orbit. The host star is 3 billion years old, has 1.28 solar masses, a radius of 1.47 solar radii, and a temperature of 6310 K. Its reported mass, radius, and temperature estimates are each larger or hotter than the Sun's.

The planet KELT-3 b was discovered by transit in 2013, the same method that revealed repeated dips in the star's brightness to establish its orbital period. KELT-3 b completes an orbit in 2.7 days. It has a mass of 617 Earth masses, roughly 1.94 times Jupiter's mass, and a radius of 17.5 Earth radii. Its minimum mass and radius estimates are larger than Earth's, and its mean density is 0.635 g/cm³, 0.115 times Earth's.
