K2-86 b: A Super-Earth in a Distant System

K2-86 is a star located 844 light-years from Earth, with one known planet in orbit around it. The star has a reported mass of 0.878 solar masses and a radius estimate of 0.831 solar radii, making it smaller than the Sun. Its reported temperature is 5180 K, which is cooler than the Sun's.

The system's only known planet is K2-86 b, a Super-Earth discovered by the transit method in 2016. This classification places it in a size range that compares its radius with Earth's: a Super-Earth reaches up to 2.5 times Earth's radius. K2-86 b has a reported radius estimate of 1.96 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. It completes one orbit in 8.78 days, a short orbital period typical of close-in planets detected by the small dips in starlight they cause as they pass in front of their host.
