K2-79 and Its Jupiter-Like Planet

K2-79 is a G1 star 835 light-years away with a mass of 1.06 solar masses, a radius of 1.27 solar radii, and a temperature of 5900 K. Its reported mass, radius, and temperature estimates are all larger or hotter than the Sun's. The star is 6.5 billion years old and hosts one known planet.

That planet, K2-79 b, was discovered by transit in 2016. The transit method detects the small dip in a star's brightness when a planet passes in front of it from our viewpoint, and repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-79 b completes an orbit in 11 days and has a radius of 4.15 Earth radii, which places it in the Jupiter-like class of planets exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. Its mean density is 0.455 g/cm³, 0.0825 times Earth's. Its mass estimate is 5.9 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, and its radius estimate is also larger than Earth's.
