K2-61 b: A Super-Earth Orbiting a Star

K2-61 is a star 1320 light-years away with 0.97 solar masses, 0.995 solar radii, and a temperature of 5750 K. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is K2-61 b, a Super-Earth discovered by transit in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-61 b completes an orbit every 2.57 days and has a radius of 1.92 Earth radii, a reported radius estimate larger than Earth's. In planet size classes, a Super-Earth reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius.
