K2-52 b: A Distant Jupiter-like World

K2-52 is a single star located 3390 light-years away, and it hosts exactly one known planet. The star itself is substantially larger and more massive than the Sun, with a mass of 1.69 solar masses and a radius of 2.19 solar radii. Its reported temperature is also hotter than the Sun's, at 7150 K.

The lone planet in this system is K2-52 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered in 2016 by the transit method. That method detects a planet when it passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in the star's observed brightness. K2-52 b orbits its host every 3.54 days. With a radius of 18 Earth radii, the planet's reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's, and it places the world firmly in the Jupiter-like size class, which covers planets exceeding 4 times Earth's radius.
