K2-5: A Cool Dwarf with Two Super-Earths

K2-5 is a K7.5 V star located 662 light-years away. It has a reported mass of 0.61 solar masses, a radius of 0.57 solar radii, and a temperature of 3930 K. These make it smaller and cooler than the Sun. Two planets have been reported orbiting it.

K2-5 b and K2-5 c are both Super-Earths, discovered by transit in 2015. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. K2-5 b completes an orbit in 5.74 days and has a radius of 1.91 Earth radii, while K2-5 c takes 10.9 days and has a radius of 2.26 Earth radii. This makes K2-5 b the smaller and faster-orbiting of the two, and K2-5 c the larger and slower one; among the listed planets, K2-5 b has the shortest year and the smallest radius, and K2-5 c has the longest year and the largest radius. Both planets are larger than Earth.
