K2-380 b: A Neptune-like World in a Distant System

K2-380 is a star located 813 light-years away, with a mass of 0.993 solar masses, a radius of 1.32 solar radii, and a temperature of 5910 K. Its reported radius estimate is larger than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is hotter than the Sun's. One planet orbits this star.

That planet, K2-380 b, is classified as Neptune-like and was discovered by the transit method in 2022. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods.

K2-380 b completes an orbit every 9.4 days and has a radius of 2.73 Earth radii, which is larger than Earth's. Because it falls within the Neptune-like size class, which extends to 4 times Earth's radius, its size classification compares radius rather than composition.
