K2-30 b: A Jupiter-like World Around a Sun-like Star

K2-30 is a G-type star located 1090 light-years away, with a spectral class suggesting it is Sun-like in character. It has one known planet. The star is estimated to be 2.2 billion years old, with a mass of 0.917 solar masses and a radius of 0.839 solar radii, making it somewhat smaller than the Sun in both respects. Its temperature of 5580 K is cooler than the Sun's.

The sole planet, K2-30 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is classified as Jupiter-like, with a radius of 11.6 Earth radii, well above the threshold that defines this size class. Its mass is 184 Earth masses, and its mean density is 0.642 g/cm³, 0.117 times Earth's. K2-30 b completes an orbit every 4.1 days.
