K2-277 b: A Super-Earth in a Close Orbit

K2-277 is a star located 369 light-years from Earth. It is 4.9 billion years old, has a mass of 0.974 solar masses and a radius of 0.973 solar radii, and its temperature is 5680 K. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is K2-277 b, a Super-Earth discovered in 2018 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-277 b completes an orbit every 6.33 days. Its radius is 2.19 Earth radii, an estimate larger than Earth's; Earth radii compare radius, not volume. A Super-Earth reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius, so the size classification describes radius rather than composition.
