K2-245 b: A Jupiter-Like World in a Distant System

K2-245 is a star located 1490 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star has a reported mass of 0.88 solar masses and a radius of 0.956 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values. Its temperature of 5940 K is hotter than the Sun's.

The sole planet, K2-245 b, was discovered in 2018 by the transit method, which detects the small dip in a star's brightness when a planet passes in front of it from our viewpoint. Repeated dips help establish the planet's orbital period. K2-245 b orbits its star every 11.9 days and has a radius of 4.34 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. That radius places it in the Jupiter-like class, which exceeds four times Earth's radius.
