K2-226 and Its Super-Earth

K2-226 is a star 689 light-years away whose reported mass estimate is 0.856 solar masses, making it smaller than the Sun, and whose reported radius estimate is 0.889 solar radii, also smaller than the Sun. It is 9.6 billion years old and has a reported temperature of 5290 K, cooler than the Sun. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet is K2-226 b, a Super-Earth discovered by transit in 2018. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-226 b orbits every 3.27 days and has a radius of 1.54 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. A Super-Earth reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius, so the size class describes radius rather than composition.
