K2-22 and Its Close-Orbiting Planet

K2-22 is a star located 795 light-years from Earth. The host star has a spectral type of M0 V and is accompanied in the catalog by one additional stellar companion, making the system a two-star one. It has a mass of 0.6 solar masses and a radius of 0.57 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values, and a temperature of 3830 K, cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host: K2-22 b.

K2-22 b was discovered in 2015 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. The planet completes an orbit in just 0.381 days, and its radius of 2.3 Earth radii is larger than Earth's. That radius places it within the Super-Earth size class, which extends to 2.5 times Earth's radius.
