K2-179 is a star 622 light-years away with one known planet. The star has a reported mass of 0.848 solar masses, a radius of 0.709 solar radii, and a temperature of 5070 K. Its mass and radius are smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature is cooler than the Sun's. The system's only listed planet is K2-179 b, a Neptune-like planet discovered by transit in 2018.
K2-179 b orbits its star every 5.17 days and has a radius of 2.51 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods.
