HIP 948: A Cool Dwarf with a Massive Companion

HIP 948 is a star located 114 light-years away. It has a mass of 0.71 solar masses and a radius of 0.688 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values, and its temperature of 4500 K is cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is HIP 948 b, discovered in 2022 by the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. HIP 948 b has a mass of 6550 Earth masses, larger than Earth's and roughly 20.6 times Jupiter's mass, and an orbital period of 25000 days.
