HIP 116454 b: A Super-Earth in a Two-Star System

HIP 116454 is a K1 star located 204 light-years away. The star is estimated to be 5.5 billion years old, with a mass of 0.8 solar masses, a radius of 0.758 solar radii, and a temperature of 5050 K. Its mass and radius are both smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature is cooler. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet, HIP 116454 b, is classified as a Super-Earth. It was discovered in 2014 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. HIP 116454 b has a mass of 9.7 Earth masses, a radius of 2.47 Earth radii, and an orbital period of 9.1 days. Both its mass and radius are larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 3.55 g/cm³, 0.644 times Earth's.
