HD 98219 and Its Planet

HD 98219 is a K-type star 371 light-years away, classified as K0 III/IV, so it sits between the giant and subgiant stages. It is 2.41 billion years old, with a mass of 1.52 solar masses, a radius of 4.52 solar radii, and a temperature of 4950 K. Its mass and radius are both larger than the Sun's, while its temperature is cooler. The star hosts one known planet.

That planet, HD 98219 b, was discovered in 2011 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. HD 98219 b has a minimum mass of 624 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass, which is larger than Earth's and roughly 1.96 times Jupiter's mass. It completes an orbit every 434 days.
