HD 208527 and Its Giant Planet

HD 208527 is a single star 1020 light-years away. Its spectral type, M1 III, marks it as an M-type giant, cooler than the Sun, with a reported temperature of 4040 K. The star's reported mass estimate is 1.6 solar masses, larger than the Sun's, and its radius is 51.1 solar radii, also larger than the Sun's. Its age is 2 billion years. One planet orbits this host.

HD 208527 b was discovered in 2012 by the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. The planet has a minimum mass of 3150 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass, and an orbital period of 876 days. Its minimum mass is larger than Earth's and roughly 9.9 times Jupiter's mass.
