HD 199509 b: A Giant Planet Around a Sun-Like Star

HD 199509 is a G3V star, a Sun-like dwarf, located 79.3 light-years away. It has a mass of 0.96 solar masses, making it smaller than the Sun, and a radius of 0.92 solar radii, also smaller than the Sun. The star is 1.6 billion years old and has a temperature of 5770 K. One planet orbits it.

That planet, HD 199509 b, was discovered in 2022 using the radial velocity method, which detects the gravitational wobble a planet induces in its star's motion. Repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period, which for HD 199509 b is 99.6 days. Its minimum mass is 43.2 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass that is larger than Earth's.
