HD 16417 is a G1V star 82.8 light-years away, a spectral type indicating a Sun-like main-sequence dwarf. Its reported temperature is 5820 K, hotter than the Sun's, while its radius of 1.63 solar radii and mass of 1.12 solar masses are both larger than the Sun's. The star is also old, with an age of 7.32 billion years. It is accompanied by a stellar companion, but only one planet is known to orbit HD 16417 itself.
That planet, HD 16417 b, was discovered in 2008 by the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. HD 16417 b completes an orbit every 17.2 days. Its minimum mass is 22.1 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass that is larger than Earth's.
