HATS-71 b: A Jupiter-Like World Around a Cool Red Dwarf

HATS-71 is an M3 V star, a small, cool red dwarf, located 457 light-years away. One planet orbits this host. The star is estimated to be 3.2 billion years old, with a mass of 0.486 solar masses and a radius of 0.478 solar radii. Its temperature is 3410 K, cooler than the Sun's.

The planet HATS-71 b is Jupiter-like, a size class that exceeds 4 times Earth's radius. It was discovered in 2020 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. HATS-71 b has a radius of 11.5 Earth radii and a mass of 118 Earth masses, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. Its orbital period is 3.8 days. The mean density is 0.428 g/cm³, 0.0778 times Earth's.
