HAT-P-42 b: A Transiting Giant in a Close Orbit

HAT-P-42 is a star located 1320 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The host star is 5.2 billion years old and has a mass of 1.18 solar masses, a radius of 1.53 solar radii, and a temperature of 5740 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are both larger than the Sun's.

The planet HAT-P-42 b is a Jupiter-like world discovered by transit in 2012. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. HAT-P-42 b has a mass of 332 Earth masses and a radius of 14.3 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 0.619 g/cm³, 0.112 times Earth's. It completes an orbit every 4.64 days.
