GJ 96 is a star 38.9 light-years from Earth with a spectral type of M2, making it a small, cool red dwarf. Its mass of 0.6 solar masses is smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature of 3790 K is cooler than the Sun's. One known planet orbits this host.
That planet, GJ 96 b, was discovered in 2018 using the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. GJ 96 b completes one orbit every 73.9 days.
Its minimum mass is 19.7 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass. That minimum mass is larger than Earth's.
