GJ 86 is a K1V star located 35.2 light-years away. This spectral type indicates a K-type main-sequence dwarf, a class cooler and redder than the Sun. The star's reported mass is 0.8 solar masses, smaller than the Sun's, and its radius is 0.8 solar radii, likewise smaller. Its temperature of 5150 K is cooler than the Sun's, and its age is 11.3 billion years. One planet is known to orbit this host.
That planet, GJ 86 b, was discovered in 1999 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Its minimum mass is 1400 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass that is larger than Earth's and roughly 4.42 times Jupiter's mass. The planet completes one orbit in 15.8 days.
