GJ 649 and Its Planet

GJ 649 is an M-type dwarf star located 33.9 light-years from Earth. Its spectral type, M1.0, places it among the cooler, redder stars. The star has a reported mass of 0.51 solar masses, a radius of 0.5 solar radii, and a temperature of 3730 K. Each of these values is smaller or cooler than the corresponding solar figure.

One planet is known to orbit this star. GJ 649 b was discovered in 2009 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. The planet's minimum mass is 82 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass, and its orbital period is 600 days. Its minimum mass is larger than Earth's.
