GJ 436 and Its Lone Known Planet

GJ 436 is a small, cool red dwarf of spectral type M3 V, sitting 31.8 light-years from us. Its mass is 0.452 solar masses and its radius is 0.464 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature of 3350 K is cooler than the Sun's. The star is also old, with an age of 6 billion years. One planet orbits this host.

That planet, GJ 436 b, was discovered in 2004 by the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. It is a Jupiter-like world, with a radius of 4.17 Earth radii - larger than Earth's - and a mass of 22.1 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its orbital period is 2.64 days, and its mean density is 1.68 g/cm³, 0.305 times Earth's.
