11 UMi b: A Giant World Orbiting a Cool Giant Star

The star 11 UMi lies 409 light-years away and hosts one known planet. It is a K4 III star. Its spectral class indicates a temperature class of K, cooler than the Sun, and its measured temperature of 4340 K confirms this. The star is more massive than the Sun at 1.8 solar masses and larger at 24.1 solar radii. Its age is 1.56 billion years.

The single planet, 11 UMi b, was discovered in 2009 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Its minimum mass is 4680 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass, and roughly 14.7 times Jupiter's mass. This makes it more massive than Earth by a wide margin. The planet completes one orbit every 516 days.
